The 51st IIHF World Championship was held from April 12 to 28, 1986, in Moscow, USSR.
The competition also included the 62nd edition of the European Championship. Eight national teams participated in the tournament. In the preliminary round, teams played each other in a single round, after which the top four advanced to the final round, where the tournament winner was determined, regardless of previous points.
The hosts, the USSR, were crowned world champions, winning their twentieth title. Sweden won the silver medal, while Canada took the bronze medal.
